AZL Autoracks
Image information
Description
Cut end open, thinned doors to look like sheet metal, re-attached to end. Inserted 1:200 \"We Honest\" cars in. Too wide, big. Märklin and Alvaro\'s cars fit and look better. Getting ready for ramps.

- The doors aren't articulated, but they do slide in tracks, as opposed to pivot on hinges. This wiki photo makes it pretty clear how it works--the doors slide outside of the car body, away from the end of the car, but inside the ladders. The doors would otherwise not be able to open when the cars were coupled together, which they had to in order that multiple cars could be loaded from a single ramp. Quite a unique mechanism, and real challenge to model, particularly in Z!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Autorack_end,_2-level.jpg0
- Tim, I really can't tell from the proto photos I sent you. To me, if the doors articulated inside, either they were one eigth inch thick :-) or some miracle mechanics. They just can't be seen on the photos. They were inside a secure area so that was the most I could zoom in. Either way, the AZL racks are 7ft-6in on the interiors. I just thinned the doors to look like sheet metal glued them on end-to-end for the maximum interior width. I painted the interiors (not in these photos) with Polly Scale Roof Brown, virtually perfect SP color after comparing several other paints.0
- Jeff, do you have the entire door open. I studied a few photos that showed the doors open and it looks like the door has hinges that allow it to slide towards the center of the car just behind the side/end ladders. If what I saw was what I just described that would mean the open doors would be recessed a few feet! Did I describe that to your understanding? I need to find those photos I looked and and email you!

Hobo Tim :-)0
- Looks like a tight fit. :o0
