- Garth-- Some ships are easy to find specs and drawings. Then I zap to Z on printer or recalculate for Z.
I was lucky for the little ferry "Prudence". I contacted the tour boat company on Cape Cod, and got her history and detailed specs. Still in operation and it's her 100 anniversary.
From there I draw out a hull form on paper, tape to block of wood and cut out on band saw, ( sideways for shear and on top for hull shape). Depending on ship- I leave two saw blade widths so I can cut out center, and then glue sides to center for bulwarks and maintaining accurate beam. Note- before gluing sides- I cut center down to height of bulwarks, so the deck is actually depressed that much. I'm condfusing myself- easier done than said. Fine shape the hull with box knife and sand paper, add scrape rails and other hull details such as cannon ports and Jonathan- this one is for you!! (Cattheads) Masts, yards, and bow sprit are a combination of small brass tubing that inserts inside each other.Sails are made from evergreen styreen plastic-about the thickness of heavy paper. It can be cut by scissors, and shaped for mildly billowing sails. The drills used for root canals are great to make holes in sail corners for thread. Reefing lines are made from heavy thread, gluded to the sail. Two types of thread are use for running and standing rigging. Both Prides have all their sails set as in light winds. Seldom done but makes for a prettier model.
A sailboat-- even just a Sailfish adds another demention to a layout- WIND.
For flags I zap the flags I need from CRW Flags brochure. They have ALL kinds of flags from gas station flags to historical etc-etc.Even Canadian provinces.
Hope this helps more than hurts.
Fred0
