- Kamahameha is a Benjamin Franklin class - Boomer - Ballistic Missile Sub. She is named after the King of Hawaii-- Starting with a "K" with 83 letters inbetween and ending in "A"---She is only the second American ship named after a monarch. (The first was a Brig in the Contenental Navy-- Alfred) She was built and commissioned in Vellejo, California in 1965. She originally had 16 Polaris missiles but in 1992 she was converted into a special weapons platform to accomadate SEAL teams. She had two large deck shelters aft of the sail, and the missile section was converted for SEAL ops.<br />This model takes a little "Artist Licence" as she is fitted with a DSRV near stern--Deep Sumbergance Recovery Vehical- launching a polaris aft of the sail and a VLS- Vertical Launch system, fwd along with her ability to act as an attack sub with torpedoes. Her 37 years of service is the longest of any nuclear sub. She was scrapped in 2002.0
